Who We Are

We are students and teachers, workers and leaders, activists and organizers, neighbors and friends. We are members of the Democratic Socialists of America in Fort Collins and Northern Colorado. Our Chapter is powered by our members and directed by their ideas and votes – never by “top-down” instructions from afar. We encourage all those interested in pursuing similar values to join us for meetings and events!

What We Believe

As a big-tent organization, we may not agree on every question, but we proudly fight side-by-side for a democratic socialist future. We are socialists because we believe in a society and an economy that treats every human with dignity, and that the working class should always come before the profits of the few. We are democratic because we believe in diversity, cooperation, and collaborative decision-making. Whether you’re comfortable in a theory deep dive, want to get involved in local elections, or just touch grass and improve the community, there’s a space for you here.

Get Involved

Everyone has something they can contribute to the movement, no matter which cause is closest to your heart! A selection of recent victories:

  • Helped to launch and support multiple local unions in both private business and public service
  • Worked to elect DSA chapter member Yara Zokaie as Colorado state representative for House District 52
  • Testified before local governing bodies such as State Legislative Committees, the Board of County Commissioners, and Fort Collins City Council in support of labor rights, environmental sustainability and progress, and many other issues
  • Met with city officials to push for resources and policies that reduce criminalization of unhoused people
  • Supported recent state legislation to enhance protections for immigrants and LGBTQ+ persons

Do these values speak to you? If they do, we’d love for you to join us! Our initiatives are all powered and shaped by our members. Our members help fund our work, propose resolutions to direct our aims, and vote for representatives on our steering committee and where our priorities of action should be.

You don’t have to be a member to get involved—you just have to show up! Our chapter is made up of different committees, which are groups of people focused on specific issues. Committee meetings are where these groups decide what to do next and how it will get done. If you’d like to be a part of what we’re doing, attend any committee meeting and ask how you can help. If you’re willing to show up and to learn, you’ll be a welcome part of our organization in no time!

It’s not all business; our calendar is full of fun as well! We co-host an annual May Day picnic with our local labor unions, plan hikes, craft events, game nights, drag shows, film showings, and just good old fashioned social outings. There is always something to do with your comrades and community!
